This work is an adaptation and evaluation of a roadmap for implementing assembly process with a 4.0 approach for a didactic device, representative of a scalable model in industrial applications. The proposed five stage roadmap, considers the characteristics and constraints of the process and establishes the technological requirements of an integrated cyber-physical system, in which the operator acts as a process manager for timely decision-making. To validate the proposed roadmap, the transition from a manual assembly process to a semi-automatic one was analyzed, considering replicable characteristics in a real production environment, such as the impact on process performance. The results showed a significant improvement in the overall equipment effectiveness by 20% and in the quality of the final product as in-process inventory by 100%, respectively, despite a 23% reduction in production capacity. The proposed methodology proved to be effective in achieving an intermediate level of maturity in the implementation of Industry 4.0, even in a small-scale environment as is the analyzed case involving an assembly process. The proposed roadmap highlights that, based on the definition of interest criteria, technological needs can be established, and for the final evaluation, a comparative criterion focused on the added value of the process is suggested. Finally, to address the challenges of cultural transition and expert knowledge, a combination of expert knowledge and performance of those involved together with technological advantages is suggested. The results of this study suggest that the implementation of 4.0 assembly processes can generate significant benefits in terms of efficiency, quality, modularity, and flexibility.
