Abstract

Weed infestation in cropping systems is a problem that affects agro-industrial producers worldwide and Mexico is no exception. Weeds affects crops directly, impacting productivity and causing excessive economic losses. Weed management and control is carried out mainly with the use of chemically synthesized herbicides such as glyphosate which although effective are associated with harmful effects on public health and the environment. Conversely, the use of herbicides of natural origin such as plant extracts are products that could be capable of exceeding the performance found in chemical products. In the present work, the plants Jatropha dioica and Flourensia cernua, native to the Chihuahuan semi-desert were tested for flavonoids, tannins, coumarins, purines and saponins, which have been reported to reach values up to 32% inhibition in the germination of Phaseolus vulgaris seeds; while in the post-emergence evaluation the extracts reached an efficacy between 60 and 90 %, causing a moderate to severe effect on the treated seedlings. Use of vegetal material with bioherbicide properties could have an outstanding potential for weed control.
