Abstract

Wood used in the furniture and construction industries is a heterogeneous, hygroscopic, anisotropic and biodegradable substance. These natural properties limit its use as an architectural and engineering material and condition the rational use of timber species with mechanical characteristics that do not meet the design criteria stipulated in the regulations. The hypothesis of this research proposes that the transformation of Fagus crenata solid wood into a multi-material wood-mesh-adhesive increases its dynamic modulus and its material index. In addition, this technological improvement decreases its natural variability. The objective of the research was to determine the density, frequency, dynamic modulus and quality index in a statistically representative sample of F. crenata specimens and to contrast them with the same parameters, but determined in specimens of the multi-material made of the same species. Transverse vibration tests were carried out on small specimens of F. crenata and their moisture content, densities, frequencies, dynamic moduli and quality indexes were determined. The main results are: a decrease in the coefficient of variation in the density of the multi-material by 24,1% with respect to that of solid wood. Density is not a good predictor of dynamic modulus (R2 = 0,21), but frequency is (R2 = 0,94). The density of the multi-material increases 4,3% compared to that of solid wood. The dynamic modulus of the multi-material increases 8,5% with respect to that of solid wood. The multi-material reduces the variability of the dynamic modulus -54,7%. The magnitude of the material index of the multi-material increases 4,0% with respect to that of solid wood. These results are restricted by the experimentation of homogeneous and statistically representative samples of F. crenata wood and wood-mesh-adhesive multi-material and are valid for the particular conditions of the methodology used in this research.
