Development of an application using a voice assistant to support tutorial activity in a Higher Education Institution in Mexico

Advances in artificial intelligence have made it possible to incorporate voice assistants (voicebots) into our daily lives, which are applications or software that allow us to engage in conversations with humans to support them in specific activities or for recreational purposes. Tutorial activity in the university environment, specifically at the Autonomous University of Yucatan (UADY), is established through the Institutional Tutoring Program (PIT), which is committed to efficient support for students during their stay at UADY. This work presents the development of an application (skill) using the Alexa voicebot, which allows the student to consult information regarding the phases of tutoring services established in the PIT. A non-probabilistic sample of 15 students was taken to evaluate the application based on a questionnaire designed to determine the level of knowledge of the students regarding the contents of the tutorial activities before and after interacting with the voice application. It was determined using the T-Student statistic for related samples that the application use significantly helps students’ knowledge of the tutorial activities. A usability test was also conducted, in which the participants described their user experience positively.
