This research evaluates the use of methane (CH4) generated by the organic fraction of Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) as fuel for energy generation. Analysis were conducted to estimate biogas emissions at a landfill in the Mexican state of Oaxaca with a daily reception rate of 1666.51 tons of MSW. A first order decay model was used, resulting in an average generation of 2,932 ft3/min of CH4, with a maximum flow of 4,072 ft3/min. The energy generation resulted in a total production of 554.85 GWh and an annual average of 36.99 GWh. In the environmental indicators, a value of 0.183 million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalents (MMTCO2E) avoided to the atmosphere with a reduction of carbon dioxide (CO2) of 0.5 % out of the total MMTCO2E generated by waste in Mexico was obtained. The financial profitability was demonstrated by evaluating the net cash flows over 15 years and a discount rate of 15 % resulting in a Net Present Value of $ USD 11,098,242.79, an Internal Rate of Return of 24% and an investment payback period of 9.4 years. These results contribute to research on the energy use of MSW in Mexico, which enables the implementation of comprehensive management systems with sustainability approaches and clean energy projects.
