Celdas de combustible: componentes, operación y aplicaciones

Las celdas de combustible son dispositivos electroquímicos que convierten la energía química de combustibles directamente en energía eléctrica mediante una reacción de óxido-reducción. El combustible y agente oxidante más comunes son el hidrógeno y el oxígeno, respectivamente. Los componentes principales de una celda de combustible son el electrolito, electrodos (ánodo y cátodo) y el circuito externo. Las temperaturas de operación van desde 15 hasta 1000 °C. Las aplicaciones dependen de varios factores como el electrolito, combustible, temperatura de operación y catalizadores. Entre las principales aplicaciones de las celdas de combustible está suministrar energía a dispositivos móviles y edificios, así como en la industria aeroespacial. Las principales ventajas de estos dispositivos son las altas eficiencias y bajas emisiones de CO2, esto convierte a las celdas de combustible en una opción atractiva para el desarrollo sustentable.
