Bioetanol, biodiésel y biogás: materias primas, procesos de producción y aplicaciones

Para satisfacer los requerimientos energéticos de las actividades humanas y diferentes industrias se usan cantidades grandes de combustibles fósiles, esto causa problemas ambientales graves. Por lo anterior, se han buscado combustibles alternativos para ser mezclados con combustibles convencionales; así, las mezclas pueden ser amigables con el ambiente, ayudar a la descarbonización de las industrias y a la transición energética. Las opciones como combustibles amigables con el ambiente son los biocombustibles líquidos (como el bioetanol y biodiésel) y gaseosos (biogás), los cuales son producidos a partir de biomasa. De acuerdo con la materia prima utilizada para su producción, estos combustibles se clasifican en biocombustibles de primera, segunda y tercera generación. Los primeros son producidos a partir de cultivos alimentarios como el maíz, caña de azúcar y trigo. Los biocombustibles de segunda generación utilizan desechos agroindustriales, residuos animales y biomasa de cultivos energéticos como materia prima, mientras que los de tercera generación se producen a partir de algas y microalgas. El bioetanol se mezcla con gasolinas en diferentes porcentajes para usar el producto como combustible en vehículos ligeros y de transporte mientras que el biodiésel no necesita ser mezclado para ser utilizado en vehículos pesados. Por otro lado, el biogás puede sustituir al gas natural en aplicaciones domésticas o industriales. Además, el bioetanol y el biogás pueden ser utilizados como materia prima en otras industrias.
