Perovskitas: una alternativa prometedora para la próxima generación de páneles solares

La crisis ambiental derivada del calentamiento global, provocado principalmente por el uso intensivo de combustibles fósiles, exige acelerar la transición energética hacia fuentes renovables. Dentro de este abanico, la energía solar fotovoltaica destaca como una de las alternativas más prometedoras, debido a la reducción sostenida de sus costos de producción en las últimas décadas y al avance en el desarrollo de nuevas tecnologías y materiales para la fabricación de células solares. Las células solares de perovskita (CSP) han cobrado gran relevancia, ya que presentan ventajas significativas frente a las elaboradas con materiales convencionales, como el silicio (Si). Una de sus principales fortalezas es la eficiencia de conversión, la cual ha alcanzado valores superiores a 26% en apenas una década de investigación y desarrollo. Asimismo, las CSP ofrecen menores costos de producción en comparación con las tecnologías comerciales actuales y exhiben una notable flexibilidad composicional, lo que permite ajustar sus propiedades según la aplicación específica. Esta versatilidad posibilita ampliar el rango de absorción de luz solar, modificar el ancho de banda prohibida y facilitar el dopaje químico. Adicionalmente, se presentan aspectos relacionados con la sostenibilidad y la toxicidad de los materiales empleados, como el plomo, el cual constituye un problema crítico, ya que este elemento presenta alta toxicidad y representa un riesgo significativo tanto para la salud humana como para el medio ambiente, lo que hace indispensable su sustitución por materiales menos nocivos.
