In this article we examine gender interactions during the courtship process among university students in Saltillo, Coahuila, Mexico. Through a qualitative approach and the conduct of four discussion groups, patterns consistent with the concept of romantic love were identified, like male initiative versus female receptivity, driven by the fear of being judged by peers. It was observed that men tend to attract attention by demonstrating skills or talents, while women often emphasize their physical attributes. In addition, the importance men place on women’s sexual history is noted, along with a male tendency towards competition and the assertion of virility, following patriarchal patterns. Despite some changes in the narrative, courtship interactions still reflect deeply ingrained gender patterns rooted in hegemonic masculinity and idealized femininities.
