Abstract

The objective is to identify and quantify the determinants of motorcycle use in México, this use has increased rapidly in recent years. A panel model with fixed effects is estimated for the states. The results indicate that variables with the greatest impact are income, number of automobiles and number of trucks; furthermore, motorcycles are not an inferior good and are complementary to automobile use. It is recognized that a limitation of the study is that state-level results cannot be generalized to cities. The study contributes in terms of originality, as there are few works analyzing motorcycle use or ownership at state level in Mexico. It is concluded that motorcycle use may be due to various factors, among which traffic congestion stands out.
