Complicated perirenal abscess: Diagnostic and therapeutic approach: case report.
Keywords:
Perirenal abscess, renal infection, sepsis, surgical drainage.Abstract
Perirenal abscess is an uncommon but potentially life-
threatening infection of the perirenal space, associated with
high morbidity and mortality when diagnosis and treatment
are delayed. Its clinical presentation is often nonspecific,
making early recognition difficult and favoring progression
to sepsis and organ failure. Predisposing factors include
diabetes mellitus, urinary tract obstruction, nephrolithiasis,
and recurrent urinary tract infections. Diagnosis relies on
clinical suspicion supported by imaging studies, with
computed tomography being the diagnostic modality of
choice. Treatment depends on abscess size, patient clinical
status, and response to antibiotic therapy, and may require
percutaneous or surgical drainage. We present the case of a
male patient with a complicated left perirenal abscess
requiring hospital management, along with a narrative review
of the literature focusing on its pathophysiology, diagnosis,
and therapeutic options.
