Abstract

Biologically Infectious Hazardous

Waste (BIHW) generated from healthcare activities

represents a risk due to pathogenic microorganisms. The

Mexican Official Standard (NOM)-087 establishes

procedures for the management of BIHW. Incoming

university students are those beginning their careers at higher

education institutions, while graduating students are those

who complete the necessary professional training program

and administrative requirements. OBJECTIVE. To conduct

a comparative analysis of the level of knowledge of NOM-

087 among incoming and outgoing university students in the health field. METHODOLOGY. With prior informed consent, a measurement instrument designed in 2015 by Oscar Zúñiga-Lemus was administered to 126 health students during the year 2024. A quantitative, cross-sectional, and descriptive study was conducted and analyzed using SPSS version 21 software. RESULTS. The results showed that 12.7% of incoming students and 25.4% of graduating students had low to average knowledge of RBW management. CONCLUSION. Additional training and specialized courses on RBW management are being implemented as an integral part of health sciences education.
