Review. González Pérez, Luis Raúl, In Defense of Journalists and Human Rights Defenders at Risk, Mexico, Tirant lo Blanch, 2016.
Abstract
In Mexico, practicing journalism and defending human rights can make a person the object of threats, aggression, disappearance, and even murder. In other words, the choice to gather and disseminate relevant information for the public interest and to defend human dignity carries significant risk. Let me explain.
According to the annual report of the organization “Artículo 19”, titled “Voices Against Indifference”, published just in March of this year, 2022 broke the record for aggressions against journalists with one documented attack every thirteen hours. As a result, Mexico is currently positioned as the deadliest country to practice journalism in the American continent, with figures similar to those of countries currently at war.
